building bio-inspired micro production

HOW CAN I MANIPULATE ALGAE TO GROW IN CERTAIN SHAPES?

This machine guides algae to grow in a designed shape by using specific illumination and rotary movements. I wanted this project to reimagine production techniques by growing objects instead of building them. In order to convert the living algae into a material, I experimented with different methods of drying and hardening the algae using freeze-drying and other  techniques. To deepen my research, I collaborated with two bio-process engineers from AlgaePARC Wageningen University. They provided me with specific materials and information, and we discussed technical solutions and outcomes.
